| Description: |
All manufactured and homebuilt motorized boats, regardless of length or type, and all sailboats 12 feet or longer are required to be titled and registered for use in Oregon. Upon application for title and/or registration a temporary operators permit will be issued by the agent,valid for up to 60 days. Upon review of documents, the Marine Board will then issue permanent documentation for the vessel.

Title fee is $30.00. Boats using any kind of motor, regardless of length, must be titled and registered in Oregon. Also, sailboats 12 feet and longer must be titled and registered in Oregon.
All motorized boats in use (in the water)must be currently registered. Also, sailboats 12 feet and longer in use (in the water)must be currently registered.
Registration is issued on a 2 calendar year basis, with all registration expiring December 31st of the year indicated. There is no retroactive payment for pryor years and no late fee for registration only. Registration is $3.00 per foot (round up any inches) based on center length of vessel, bow to stern. For example, the registation fee for a 17'4" boat would be: 18' x 3 = $54.00. |

A NEW BOAT:
If the boat is new, you need to complete an Application for Boat Title and furnish the original "Manufacturer's Statement of Origin" (MSO). Submit the application, MSO and required fees to the Marine Board.
AN OREGON TITLED BOAT:
If the boat has been previously registered in Oregon, you should receive an Oregon "Certificate of Title for a Boat" from the seller. The legal and registered owners must release their interest by signing and dating the release of interest section of the title. Complete the "Application for Title by New Owner" section and submit it to the Marine Board with the required fees.
AN OUT OF STATE TITLED BOAT:
If the boat is from another state that issues boat titles, you should receive a Certificate of Title from the seller. The legal and registered owners must release their interest by signing and dating the release of interest portion of the out of state title. Complete an Oregon Application for Boat Title and submit it to the Marine Board with the required fees.
A BOAT FROM A NON-TITLING STATE:
If the boat was previously registered in another state that does not issue titles, submit an "Application for Boat Title," Bill of Sale, and the prior owner's registration card.
A BOAT THAT HAS NUMBERS, BUT THE SELLER DOES NOT HAVE THE TITLE:
Contact the Marine Board to obtain the name and last known address of the owner(s) of record. Complete an Application for Lost Boat Title, all owners of record must release their interest and verify the title is lost by signing the Lost Boat Title Application in front of a notary public, or by signing and providing a copy of a valid photo identification(such as driver's license)front and back. The previous lien-holder of record will also need to release their interest and verify the title is lost. The lien-holders signature must be accompanied by a company linestamp.
A BOAT THAT HAS NEVER BEEN TITLED OR REGISTERED:
To title your boat, complete an Application for Boat Title. You'll also be required to furnish proof of ownership. If you have the bill of sale or MSO, send it with a statement explaining why the boat has not been titled or registered.
If you no longer have a bill of sale or MSO, send a completed boat history form. Include how the boat was acquired, how long you have owned the boat and whether it has been previously registered or titled in Oregon or any other state.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTAIN BOATS:
Some boats in Oregon are required to be inspected by a Marine Law Enforcement Officer before they can be titled and registered. These include homebuilt boats and boats never titled or registered in any other state, boats registered in a non-title state and boats where the hull number listed in the application or previous title appears to be incorrect. Excluded are new manufactured boats with a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO), boats titled in another state if the title accompanies the application for Oregon title. Any boat may be required to be inspected. The inspection focuses on the hull identification number (HIN). The Marine Board determines whether your boat needs to be inspected upon receiving your Application for Boat Title. If so, the board will notify you and provide a list of officers to contact for the boat HIN inspection. After the HIN inspection is completed, you will receive a "HIN Inspection Certificate." You must return the certificate directly back to the Marine Board, not an agent, at P.O. Box 14145, Salem, OR 97309-5065. You may continue to use your boat while waiting for your inspection and/or title and registration documents, provided you have a valid temporary permit. |
