Description: The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Asbestos Program licenses contractors that perform friable asbestos abatement. This license allows asbestos abatement contractors to remove friable asbestos material. Worker certifications are issued to individuals that have completed four days of training learning to remove friable asbestos. Supervisor certifications are issued to individuals that have completed the four day worker certification and an additional five days of training learning how to supervise friable asbestos abatement projects.

Duration: One year
Fees - application, exam, etc.:  License fee is $1000 per year. Certification fees are $45.00 for each worker and $65.00 for each supervisor per year.

Examination Information: Employee asbestos educational requirements:
DEQ's asbestos program also accredits training providers that train individuals for asbestos removal work. There are two levels of training: Asbestos Supervisor and Asbestos Worker. This training is 4 days and 5 days respectively and the cost is $400.00 to $550.00 including certification. Workers and supervisors must pass a 100 question test upon completion of the initial training. There is no test for Licensed Contractors.
Continuing Ed Requirements: Workers and supervisors must take an 8-hour refresher class each year, and pass a 50 question test in order to maintain their certification.
Bonding Requirements: None
Prerequisites: To qualify to attend the Supervisors class, an individual must have 3-6 months experience as an asbestos abatement worker; or have 6 months to one year experience as a superintendent for project oversight in the general construction industry; or 6 months to one year experience as the foreman for an operation maintenance program at a large facility or equivalent experience.
