Annotation: Statistical information on trends in violent crime is presented by means of graphical displays that include estimates of the degree of precision, based on data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) during 1973-96.
Abstract: The discussion is intended for an audience that is not trained in statistics. It discusses sampling, statistical significance, the precision of the NCVS estimates, statistical inference, and sample size and precision. The survey currently gathers information from a national sample of 45,000 households, using interviews with the approximately 94,000 household members ages 12 years or over. It measures property crimes and the violent crimes of rape and sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. The survey does not provide data about murder, because its data are the result of interviews with victims. The murder data come from the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reports. The data revealed that a statistically significant increase or decrease in the violent crime rate occurred in 8 of the 23 periods studied. The data also reveal that among violent crimes, the highest rate is for simple assault and the lowest rate is for murder. Figures
