New Hampshire Geological Survey

Welcome to the New Hampshire Geological Survey (NHGS). The Survey's mission is to collect data and perform research on the land, mineral, and water resources of the state, and disseminate the findings to the public through maps, reports, and other publications. NHGS is directed by the state geologist. Major activities include:

  • Providing state agencies, local governments, planning commissions, the private sector, and the general public with geologic information to meet their scientific, educational, and business needs.
  • Identifying and mapping the bedrock, surficial materials (sand, gravel, silt and clay), and mineral deposits in New Hampshire.
  • Maintaining the state's database of water well completion records and water use information.
  • Providing earth science education and outreach information.
