Description: Time periods are established for inwater work to avoid the vulnerable life stages (including migration, spawning, and rearing) of important fish species including anadromous and other game fish and threatened, endangered, or sensitive species. The guidelines provide the public a way of planning inwater work during periods of time that would have the least impact on important fish, wildlife, and habitat resources. Other state and federal agencies typically incorporate the timing guidelines as conditions of their permits for work in water.

Inwater timing guidelines are typically applied to activities that are proposed in streams, rivers, upstream tributaries, and associated reservoirs and lakes. The timing guidelines are not typically applied in ocean waters or wetlands.

Anadromous: Fish which are born in fresh water, spend a portion of their lives in the ocean and then return to spawn.

Water related projects often require multiple permits. Please see Common Water Related Projects for information on other permits that may be required to accomplish your project.
