Description: A "minor" is anyone under the age of 18. In general, a minor must be at least 14 years old to work in non-agricultural employment in Oregon. There are special regulations that apply to the employment of minors in agriculture. Employers of minors 14-17 years of age must obtain an Employment Certificate (See "Minors, Annual Employment Certificate for Minors").

The Oregon Wage and Hour Commission may allow younger individuals to work under certain circumstances. Minors under 14 years of age may not be employed in any enterprise subject to the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act, in any establishment where alcoholic beverages are dispensed or served, in any theater or amusement park, in any work that involves the minor in canvassing door to door, or in any establishment catering to adults only. Parents may employ their children under 16 years of age in occupations other than manufacturing or mining, or occupations declared hazardous by the US Department of Labor. For more information, please contact the Bureau of Labor and Industries.

Minors under 14 are required to obtain an individual work permit.
