Description: Veterinary Technicians assist veterinarians in the treatment of animals, usually in animal hospitals and clinics. The skills may be learned in a two-year community college program. Veterinary Technicians are awarded a certification upon meeting the requirements for licensure.

Duration: Annual
Fees - application, exam, etc.:  Examination: $85.
Renewal: $25 yearly.
Responsible Agency: Veterinary Medical Examining Board
Examination Information:
  • Exam Time: Second Friday in June (deadline: April 1st), and second Friday in January (deadline: November 1st).
  • Exam Locs: Portland.
  • Exam Pass: Raw Criterion Score 425.
  • Exam Repeat: Upon application to the Examining Board. Exam may be taken out-of-state and score transferred to Oregon.

Insurance Requirements: None
Prerequisites: 1. Be a graduate of a two year accredited program in Veterinary Technology, OR Have four years on-the-job training as a veterinary assistant.
2. Pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam.

Renewals: Renewal application form will be mailed to you at your most recient address.

Hold a valid Oregon Veterinary Technicians License.

  • Completed application
  • Proof of completion of veterinary technicain degree or at least 4 calendar years of on-the-job training and experience as a veterinary technician while employed by a licensed veterinarian, plus completion of a 20-hour radiation safety training course.
