Description: |
A person who has received formal training in prehospital and emergency care and is state-certified to attend any ill, injured or disabled person. Police officers, fire fighters, funeral home employees and other personnel serving in a dual capacity, one of which meets the definition of "emergency medical technician" are "Emergency Medical Technicians" within the meaning of ORS chapter 682.

Continuing Ed Requirements: |
CPR Certificate (Required), Formal Trauma Case Review (3hrs), Formal Medical Case Review (3hrs), Indications, contraindications and complications of medications within EMT-Intermediate Scope of practice (4hrs), Review of current medical issues relating on pre-hospital care at EMT-Intermediate level (4hrs). In addition to the above, the EMT - Intermediate must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas as evidenced by the signature of the medical director of the EMT-Intermediate:- Basic airway care to include insertion of a pharyngeal esophageal airway device,
- Rapid extrication and spinal immobilization,
- Intravenous and intraossious access and administration of medications authorized for use by EMT-Intermediate,
- Cardiac arrest management,
- ECG monitoring/interpretation and application of EMT-Intermediate protocols to clinical scenarios.
A maximum of 25 percent of the total required hours for EMT-Intermediate may be obtained by completing any one or combination of any of the following: - teaching related subjects;
- being an EMT exam evaluator, or
- reading medical director or his/her designee pre-approved EMS journals or articles. Special Considerations means any EMS subject that does not fall in either trauma or medical related subjects. If using audiovisual programs, the EMT must have prior approval from his/her medical director or his/her designee and will be calculated hour-for-hour.
CPR Training must: be an American Heart Association "Level C" "Basic Life Support for the Professional Rescuer", American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) CPR-PRO, EMP-Medic First Aid (BLSPRO) or American Green Cross/National Safety Council Professional Rescuer BLSCRP course completion document.
