Description: This certification allows the holder to instruct the boating safety course, "Boat Oregon - A Course on Responsible Boating", to boaters in communities throughout Oregon. The "Boat Oregon" course is a high quality, low cost course designed to promote safe boating practices reduce boating accidents, injuries, and violations on Oregon waters.

Duration: Ongoing - as long as it is current
Fees - application, exam, etc.:  $15, For-profit providers.
Responsible Agency: Marine Board
Fee Exemptions: No charge for volunteers
Continuing Ed Requirements: The instructor training course focuses on:
  • Teaching Techniques
  • Course Standards and Requirements
  • Teaching Aids & Materials
  • Adding Activities into your Course
  • Presentation Practice and Feedback
Prerequisites:
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Pass a criminal history check conducted by the Marine Board Law Enforcement Division.
  • Have successfully completed a boating safety course approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and have an Oregon Boater Education Card.
  • Have a minimum of one year of power boating experience.
  • Have a minimum of 60 hours teaching and/or public speaking experience.
  • Ability to conduct classes in a professional manner, be a role model for students, accept other peoples values and opinions and interact with the public in a polite and helpful manner.
Renewals: Renewal is automatic as long as the certificate is kept current. The certificate is current if you:
  • Teach or co-teach at least two courses per year
  • Attend training sessions to receive updates as required
