Description: Trucking companies can equip their trucks with transponders that identify them as they approach 21 Oregon weigh stations located around the state. The stations are equipped with the Green Light weigh station preclearance system that can weigh trucks in-motion at highway speed and signal them to proceed without stopping if they pass an instantaneous check of size, weight, height, registration, road-use tax account status, and safety records. Transponders are palm-size devices that are affixed to the inside of the truck windshield. They're available at no charge for trucks that have permanent Oregon registration credentials, three axles or more, and a minimum declared weight of 34,001 pounds. The truck must have been stopping at Oregon Green Light weigh stations an average of at least once per month. Also, the company may not have an "Unsatisfactory" safety fitness rating.

Use Trucking Online to complete a Transponder Application online Form. The online application is part of the Public Access Menu so a company does not need a Trucking Online password to access it. They just enter their U.S. DOT number and Oregon account number, along with carrier and vehicle information. They then receive an e-mail confirmation that the application has been submitted for approval. Visit the Green Light Web site for more information.

Fees - application, exam, etc.:  Green Light is a free service. There are no administrative fees or per-pass charges. Green Light transponders work in all states participating in the NORPASS weigh station preclearance system and they're capable of working in all states in the HELP PrePass system. Users just enroll and agree to the terms and conditions of the other systems, including paying fees for preclearance in PrePass states.

Green Light transponders are available at no-charge for the first transponders a company obtains to get started bypassing Oregon weigh stations. Once a company has its transponders, it owns them and when the batteries die in 5-7 years it is responsible for paying to either replace the batteries or buy new transponders. Read more about a Truck Transponder Service Center in Salem that can refurbish transponders for about $15 each so they can be used for another 5-7 years.
