School Counselors assist students to develop decision-making skills; obtain information about themselves; understand opportunities and alternatives available in educational programs; set tentative career and educational goals; accept responsibility for own actions; develop interpersonal relation skills and utilize school and community resources.
Exam Time: CBEST: February, April, June, August, October and December. PPST: January, March, April, June, September and November. Exam Locs: CBEST: Ashland, Bend, Eugene, La Grande, Monmouth, Ontario and Portland. PPST: Ashland, Bend, Coos Bay, Corvallis, Eugene, La Grande, Monmouth, Portland and St. Helens. Exam Pass: CBEST: Total score of 123. The lowest possible score for passing a content area is 37, provided that the passing total score of 123 is achieved. PPST: Reading (174), Writing (171), and Mathematics (175). Exam Repeat: Unlimited.
Prerequisites:
1. Complete a master's or higher degree in counseling, education, or related behavioral sciences from a regionally accredited institution together with any equally accredited bachelor's degree program. 2. Complete, as part of a graduate program or separately, a graduate program in school counseling. 3. Have two years of public school teaching experience OR complete a practicum in teaching at any level, as part of a graduate program or separately. 4. Pass either the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or complete a doctorate degree at a nationally accredited college or university. 5. Pass the Praxis specialty test in School Guidance and Counseling (20420) with a minimum score of 630 or verify five years of full-time successful school counselor experience in out-of-state public schools or regionally accredited private schools.
