Description: Electrical Inspectors conduct on-site construction inspections of electrical work and may review construction plans for all work regulated by the Electrical Specialty Code.

To work as an Electrical Inspector in Oregon you must possess:
1) an Electrical Inspector Certification obtained prior to 10/1/05, or
2) an Oregon Inspector Certification and certification as an Oregon Electrical Inspector issued after 10/1/05.

Examination Information: Applicant schedules and takes examination. BCD issues/grade results

The Process:
1. Applicant schedules examination with test location.
2. At test, applicant provides photo ID and Letter of Authorization.
3. Applicant must have no. 2 pencils, nonprogrammable calculator, and/or appropriate reference materials.
4. Applicant may also be required to take an architectural barrier law AB Part II) examination on accessibility.

Applicant is sent letter of authorization.
Note: Applicants who do not take the examination within 60 days of authorization forfeit their fees. Fees must be resubmitted for reauthorization to examine.

Certification Process:
Please allow two weeks for Building Codes Division to grade exams. Do not contact the test location for grade results. The Building Codes Division will mail notification of grade results to the applicant. Licenses will be issued after the applicant has passed the examination and paid the appropriate fees.

Failed examination.
  • First-attempt applicant waits 30 days before re-testing.

  • Second-attempt applicant waits 90 days before re-testing.

  • Third-attempt applicant waits one year before re-testing.
  • Continuing Ed Requirements: Oregon Administrative Rule 918-281-0010:
    Electrical inspectors must obtain continuing education as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rule 918-098-1450. Those with electrical licenses shall maintain their license. During electrical code-change years, the code-change credits shall be obtained prior to or no later than six months after the effective date of the applicable code.

    Insurance Requirements: None
    Prerequisites: To qualify for the certification, the individual shall have the following training or experience or both:

    (a) Four years experience as a licensed general journeyman electrician and a current valid Oregon general supervising electrician license;
    (b) A four-year Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, plus three years approved experience in design, inspection or supervision of installations covered by the National Electrical Code or Electrical Specialty Code or
    (c) Equivalent experience or qualifications approved by the board.
    (d) After October 1, 2005, a person must also possess a valid Oregon Inspector Certification prior to performing inspections.

    Persons qualifying under subsection (2)(b) or (2)(c) of this rule shall pass the Oregon general supervising electrician license examination with a minimum grade of 75 percent.
