Description: "Private security professional" means an individual who performs, as the individual's primary responsibility, private security services for consideration, regardless of whether the individual, while performing the private security services, is armed or unarmed or wears a uniform or plain clothes, and regardless of whether the individual is employed part-time or full-time to perform private security services.
"Private security services" means the performance of at least one of the following activities:
(a) Observing and reporting unlawful activity.
(b) Preventing or detecting theft or misappropriation of goods, money or other items of value.
(c) Protecting individuals or property, including but not limited to proprietary information, from harm or misappropriation.
(d) Controlling access to premises being protected.
(e) Securely moving prisoners.
(f) Taking enforcement action by detaining persons or placing persons under arrest under ORS 133.225.
(g) Providing canine services for guarding premises or for detecting unlawful devices or substances.
(9) "Supervisory manager" means an employee of or a person supervised by an executive manager who has as a primary responsibility the supervision of certified private security professionals.

Fees - application, exam, etc.:  Original License: $50 for 2-year certificate, $50 for one-time criminal history file.
Renewal: $50.

Examination Information: Exam Time: Most employers have state-certified trainers in-house. Community Colleges and private entities also offer training and subsequent examinations.
Exam Locs: Employers' places of business or community colleges offering training.
Exam Pass: 86 percent.
Exam Repeat: As many times as necessary.
Bonding Requirements: None
Insurance Requirements: None
Prerequisites: 1. Must be 18 years of age if unarmed.
2. Must be 21 years of age if armed.
3. Have successfully completed state-mandated training as specified in ORS 181.883; OAR 259-060-0060 through 0075
4. Submit notarized application, fingerprints, record of training, and not have been convicted of a disqualifying crime as described in OAR 259-060-0020.

There is no reciprocity for experienced private security providers licensed/certified in other states who want to get an Oregon Certification. An applicant may challenge the eight-hour basic classroom instruction component of the training requirements, if the person has two or more years of experience in the field of law enforcement, military police or private security; or has received any private security or law enforcement training.
