Eldredge Prize: Maurie D. McInnis "Slaves Waiting for Sale: Visualizing the American Slave Trade"

Join Maurie D. McInnis, professor of American art and material culture and associate dean for undergraduate academic programs in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia, and winner of the museum's 2012 Charles C. Eldredge Prize for distinguished scholarship, for a discussion on her book.
Symposium: Nation Building: Craft and Contemporary American Culture. American Art Museum

This symposium will examine craft's increasingly urgent role within contemporary American culture. Coinciding with the fortieth anniversary of the Renwick Gallery as the Smithsonian American Art Museum's branch museum for contemporary craft and decorative arts, this program seeks to broaden the dialogue surrounding craft's recent histories, and to articulate rapid changes to the field since the beginning of the current century.
Effects of the Civil War on American Art - Smithsonian American Art

Join us for a Civil War Symposium, Friday, November 16 at 10 a.m. as we examine the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on American landscape, genre painting, and photography. Keynote by senior curator Eleanor Jones Harvey; presenters include Jeff Rosenheim, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Peter H. Wood, Duke University, John Davis, Smith College, Maurie McInnis, University of Virginia and Randall Griffin, Southern Methodist University.

Clarice Smith Distinguished Lecture with Adam Gopnik

Adam Gopnik is an American critic, essayist, commentator, and journalist. A writer for The New Yorker, he has published widely and produced several collections of essays and nonfiction books. Gopnik, the recipient of three National Magazine Awards for Essays and Criticism and a George Polk Award for Magazine Reporting, will reflect on the common threads that connect American Art in his lecture,What Makes American Art American?

Clarice Smith Distinguished Lecture with Kevin Salatino - Smithsonian American Art Museum

Kevin Salatino is the Director of Art Collections at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA. He has curated exhibitions on the work of Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, and William Wegman, among many others. Salatino, who recently curated the groundbreaking exhibition Edward Hopper's Maine at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, will share his insights on the artist and his work in his presentation Edward Hopper and the Burden of (Un)Certainty. Reception follows each lecture. This annual series is made possible by the generosity of Clarice Smith.
