The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) are found in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Finding references in the FMCSR may seem a little difficult at first, but with practice and an understanding of the organization of the FMCSR, the references are easily located.

A FMCSR reference number consists of up to five components that indicate a specific location in the regulations. For example, the FMCSR reference number 391.41(b)(2)(i) is broken into the following components:
