Provides updated estimates of the incidence of child abuse and neglect in the United States, measures changes in these estimates from earlier studies, and examines the incidence of child maltreatment in relation to various subgroups defined by the child's characteristics and family or household characteristics. This website includes the Report to Congress and other supplementary reports from the NIS-4.

The Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect Reports data from a representative sample of more than 5,600 professionals from 42 counties in the United States. The analysis examined the number of children harmed by abuse and neglect, child characteristics, family characteristics, perpetrator characteristics, report sources and CPS investigation. Significant increases were found in the number of abused and neglected children who were harmed, and at risk of harm, since the previous study in 1986. This report presents a synopsis of the background and objectives of the Third National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect (NIS-3), its design and methods, and its key findings. The National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) facilitates the secondary analysis of research data relevant to the study of child abuse and neglect. Datasets from the first three National Incidence Studies are available from NDACAN to approved researchers. Technical assistance with analysis of the data and other resources are also available.
