Preventing Abuse of Older Persons Who Live in the Community

The Elder Abuse and Neglect Program, under the authority of the Elder Abuse and Neglect Act (320 ILCS 20/1 et seq.), responds to reports of alleged abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of persons 60 years of age and older. The program provides investigation, intervention and follow-up services to victims. Reports increase each year, as the older population grows and awareness of elder abuse increases. The program stresses the mentally competent older adult’s right to make their own decisions.

Icon indicating that the publication is in the PDF format The Elder Abuse Program is locally coordinated through 45 provider agencies, which are designated by the regional Area Agency on Aging and the Department on Aging. Case workers from these agencies conduct investigations and work with older adults in resolving abusive situations. All Elder Abuse caseworkers are trained and certified by the Department.

Break the SilenceIn November 2004, Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich signed a proclamation designating July 2005 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month. In conjunction with the Governor's proclamation, a tool kit was developed to help elder abuse provider agencies, Area Agencies on Aging and all interested parties raise awareness of elder abuse in communities throughout the state.
