The Explainers program gives young adults a wonderful opportunity to work at the National Air and Space Museum . Explainers assist visitors with the exhibit units in the How Things Fly gallery. They also present demonstrations on aviation and space topics for audiences of 50 visitors or more. Explainers also work with the Discovery Station program presenting a variety of topics. They also assist with NASM Family Days and other special events during the year. Training is provided for all aspects of the job.

To be an Explainer, you must be:
At least 16 years of age
Able to interact and communicate with diverse groups of visitors and museum staff
Currently enrolled in a diploma or degree granting program of a Washington D.C. , Maryland or Virginia high school or college
Available to work at least 16 hours per month
Skilled in written and oral communication
Willing to attend ongoing training and conduct self-study in general scientific principles relating to aeronautics and space science.
Explainers work at least two days each month during the school year (September to May) and up to four days during the summer. Explainers work weekend days as scheduled. Pay rates are competitive.

A Statement of Purpose – This should be a typed, double-spaced essay on how you could contribute to the program and how this job would assist you in your career and/or educational goal.
An official high school and /or college transcripts
Two letters of recommendation

Please be advised that to be an Explainer at the National Air and Space Museum you must be a United States citizen with a photo ID, a naturalized citizen with proper documentation, OR a non-citizen with proper INS authorization to work in the United States.
