Prevention Services - Promoting Healthy Behaviors and Lifestyles

Fast Facts

Fast Facts: During 2005-2006, approximately 47,276 people benefitted from specific prevention services. More than 800,000 Oregonians were exposed to broad-based prevention information.

AMH's and SAMHSA's Prevention Platform is a systemic community-based approach, which aims to ensure that substance abuse prevention programs can and do produce results. This approach to prevention will help move our state closer to the vision of local community members using the powers of prevention to lead healthier, longer lives.

AMH endorses the use of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) for implementation of prevention activities. SPF uses a five-step process known to promote youth development, reduce risk-taking behaviors, build assets and resilience, and prevent problem behaviors across the life span.

The idea behind SPF is to use the findings from public health research along with evidence-based prevention programs to build capacity within state, local communities and the prevention field. This in turn will promote resilience and decrease risk factors in individuals, families, and communities.

Research provides strong evidence that prevention helps people make healtful choices about the way they live their lives. Prevention also reduces risk factors associated with alcohol and drug abuse.

Prevention programs are aimed at three audiences:

Universal prevention is for all people; Selective prevention is for people who are at above average risk of involvement with alcohol and other drugs; Indicated prevention is for people who show minimal but detectable signs of involvement with alcohol and other drugs but do not meet diagnostic criteria for abuse or dependence.
