Introduction
The Office of Rights and Reproductions at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution:
Sells prints and slides of the unrestricted portraits in its collection
Licenses images for use in books, magazines, television, CD-ROMs, and other media.
The office will make every effort to assist with general requests, however, this is not a research facility. The Catalog of American Portraits (CAP) is another source for individual research and an appointment to visit the CAP may be made by calling (202) 633-8260. The CAP's database of nearly 70,000 portrait records is easily accessed through our Portrait Search area. The National Portrait Gallery and American Art Library may also be utilized by the public for research by calling (202) 633-8230 to make an appointment.
Requests for photographic materials for personal use, research, non-profit publications, and non-printed media use (including videos, CD-ROMS, Web sites, etc.) will be handled by the Office of Rights and Reproductions and will be subject to its fees.
Art Resource in New York City has been contracted to handle requests for images in the permanent collection that will be utilized in commercial or profit-making ventures, and in publications with print runs over 10,000. Requests for such reproduction uses may be forwarded to Art Resource for processing and will be subject to their standard materials and photographic usage fees.
