The State of Illinois is committed to fighting
discrimination baseded on ethnicity, religion, skin color, gender, disability or sexual
orientation in Illinois.
The Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes,
formed in 1999, is the states answer to solving the problems of discrimination
and hate-based violence.
With one of the most comprehensive hate crimes laws in the country,
Illinois has the tools to respond swiftly and appropriately to incidents of
discrimination and hate crimes. The Commission actively works with law enforcement,
the courts, religious leaders, schools, community organizations and social service
agencies to educate and foster acceptance and tolerance. The Commission is also
uniquely poised to make statutory and programmatic changes that will further uproot
sources of discrimination and bias.
The Commission also offers the citizens of
Illinois direct access to the people who are addressing the issues of hatred and
bigotry.
