Welcome to
the Department of Anthropology
Anthropology is the study of human beings and societies in the past and present and their relationships with the natural world. The Smithsonian’s Department of Anthropology staff is engaged in research on a wide range of topics, including cultural history, linguistics, human-environmental interactions, population migration, origins of domestication, human biological diversity, and forensic anthropology. The research collections total over two million items from around the world, contributing to our knowledge about the human species and the diversity of the world’s cultures.
