Irene Collins, Commissioner

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to update you on the aging network, as there have been exciting changes take place with our new administration. Last week I had the pleasure of attending a reception for Kathy Greenlee in Washington, D.C. who is our new Assistant Secretary for the Administration on Aging. She was nominated by President Barack Obama in May and was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate as the 4th Assistant Secretary for Aging at the Department of Health and Human Services a few weeks ago.

It is an honor to have Assistant Secretary Greenlee leading the Administration on Aging, as she has demonstrated an exceptional record and extensive experience in working first-hand in the aging field. She previously served as the Secretary of the Kansas Department of Aging, the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman in Kansas, as well as the state’s Assistant Secretary of Aging, with the responsibilities of legislative liaison and chief budget officer.

Assistant Secretary Greenlee recently served on the board of the National Association of State Units on Aging (NASUA) for which I am currently the incoming president. I will be sworn-in as NASUA’s president this fall and will proudly represent the nation's 56 officially designated state and territorial agencies on aging.

ADSS received stimulus dollars for two of our programs which allowed us to save jobs and serve more clients. We have created a link on the left, “ARRA Stimulus Expenditure Tracking”, where you can follow how much ADSS received and how it was spent.

The U.S. Congress and Senate are in session and currently debating several bills that would have an impact on seniors if passed. As always we will be advocating for you to ensure your ability to age with independence and dignity. Please visit our Legislative Update link to the left for more information on these bills.

If we can be of any assistance, please call your local Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-243-5463 or visit www.alabamaconnect.gov.

Irene B. CollinsSincerely,
Irene B. Collins
Commissioner
