The 55 delegates had been sent by the 13 states to revise the Articles of Confederation, but they ended up drafting an entirely new plan of government. They ranged in age from 26-year-old Jonathan Dayton to 81-year-old Benjamin Franklin, who had to be carried to sessions in a sedan chair. (National Archives and Records Administration)

In 1774, George Mason was in the forefront of political events. Virginia's Declaration of Rights, framed by Mason in 1776, was widely copied in other colonies, served as a model for Jefferson in the first part of the Declaration of Independence, and was the basis for the federal Constitution's Bill of Rights. |
