Survey technicians are checking gypsy moth traps across the state. The tent-like traps contain a lure to attract the male moths and sticky glue to prevent them from escaping. Detecting this moth early allows ODA and cooperators to eradicate infestations when they are small. Gypsy moth caterpillars defoliate millions of acres of trees and shrubs annually in the northeastern US. Since the late 1970's, small isolated populations of this insect have been detected and successfully eradicated in Oregon.
