A Safe Place for Newborns Law

To avoid the tragedy of an abandoned baby, Oregon created a law that allows a distressed parent to give up a baby safely, legally, and confidentially. This law allows a birth parent to leave a newborn infant at a hospital, doctor's office, birthing clinic, police station, fire department, or sheriff office.

There will be no legal consequences for making this choice as long as the baby:

  • is 30 days old or younger,

  • is handed to a person at one of the above safe places, and

  • shows no signs of abuse.

If you are considering making this choice, see the information on our birth parent page and on the resources page.

If you are a member of an authorized safe infant surrender facility, guidelines, forms, and other information are available online.
