Leann Bertsch
Director, Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
Leann K. Bertsch was appointed Director of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation by Governor Hoeven in July 2005, after serving as Commissioner of the Department of Labor. Prior to her appointment, Bertsch served as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Burleigh County, North Dakota, for 8 years. Bertsch worked as a staff attorney for Legal Assistance of North Dakota from 1992 – 1996, where she assisted low income and elderly citizens of North Dakota with public assistance programs, housing issues and family law issues. Bertsch also serves in the North Dakota National Guard and is currently assigned to Joint Force Headquarters as an Assistant Judge Advocate. A native of Hillsboro, North Dakota, Bertsch attended the University of North Dakota School of Law and received a J.D. in 1991, and also attended North Dakota State University and earned a B.S. degree in 1988. She resides in Bismarck with her husband, Rick Volk, and their two children.
