Technology - Working Together…Moving Forward

Technology is an integral part of the lives of those who live, work and go to school in North Dakota. That's why it is important that we keep pace with rapid technology changes and incorporate advances that benefit North Dakotans. Technology is vital to the continued growth and success of our state because it creates the careers of the future, attracts and retains youth, and holds the promise of higher paying jobs.

We're building our information technology infrastructure to help businesses and government become more profitable and efficient. Measures include:

  • Enhancing the Criminal Justice Information System's Hub, which helps law enforcement agencies better protect the public by providing criminal information to our law enforcement officials via a secure information hub.
  • Funding for the Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS).
  • Funding for the GIS Hub, which benefits education, economic development, agriculture, energy, and technology.
  • Creation of a central database to manage animal tracking and disease containment.

Technology in Education

Driving an agenda for growth in North Dakota must include education. In today's world, the link between education and commerce is crucial. Assisted by technology resources, student learning and research are integral to economic development in our state and to preparing our young people for the careers of the future.

The State is working with K-12 schools and the North Dakota University System to continue to promote educational opportunities that bring new knowledge to North Dakota and to develop and expand statewide educational technology initiatives to enhance learning and outcome for students.

K-12 Education

  • Provide additional funding to move schools toward more technology-rich teaching and learning environments.
  • Continue the growth of Internet2 capabilities in cooperation with the North Dakota University System for classroom support, research activities and collaborative K-20 projects.
  • Expand the implementation of PowerSchool in school districts to enable teachers, administrators and parents to better track students progress.
  • Expand distance education programs through increased use of video and web-based delivery systems.
  • Continue to provide professional development opportunities related to the use of technology to meet changing education needs.

University System

  • Improve information technology-enabled business processes and services, including ConnectND and the Online Dakota Information Network library system.
  • Expand Interactive Video Network services and initiatives to include additional user options and enhanced videoconferencing capabilities.
  • Continue to grow the North Dakota University System Online so that additional online courses are available to students to supplement in-classroom learning, as well as take some programs completely online.
  • Enhance communications capabilities made available through STAGEnet to improve services to students, faculty, staff and citizens.

Technology in Business

Technology is creating important new opportunities for our citizens. As one of our five targeted industries for growth, North Dakota's technology-based business sector is growing and diversifying. Companies like Microsoft, PacketDigital, Alien Technologies and Eagle Creek Software are forging ahead and we are working to build on their success. Through our Centers of Excellence program, we're helping other companies develop and grow, too.

North Dakota is committed to technology advancements and to building a strong business climate in which technology-based businesses can grow and succeed. We are implementing strategies and initiatives to continue creating higher paying jobs, developing a workforce prepared for the opportunities of the future and fostering an environment where innovation and entrepreneurship thrive.

Technology in Government

The State of North Dakota is working hard to build an enterprise infrastructure that supports the business processes of state agencies and delivers cost effective technology services that will benefit the citizens of North Dakota. Four key goals include:

  • Improve the delivery of government services by expanding the use of online and automated systems.
  • Meet changing business needs by providing dependable, robust systems.
  • Allow informed decision making by securely collecting and disseminating information.
  • Maximize the value of technology by collaborating to provide shared solutions.
