Concord, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announces June is National Smile Month.  National Smile Month is an effort to recognize the importance of brushing your teeth, good nutrition and regular dental visits.  DHHS’ Tobacco Prevention and Control Program (TPCP) along with the Oral Health Program, Oral Health America, dental offices, community care providers, schools, camps and oral health coalitions will be celebrating summer and encouraging families not to forget their toothbrush when they go on vacation.

“Summer is a great time of year when parents spend more time with their children,” said DHHS Director of Public Health Dr. Jose Montero.  “It’s also a great time to brush up on good dental habits and set a healthy example for our children by not using tobacco.”

TPCP and the Oral Health Program are reminding NH residents that tobacco use and oral health don’t mix. Using any type of tobacco can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, bad breath, discolored teeth and oral cancer.

National Smile Month promotes the importance of:

  • Brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Visiting a dental care provider as often as they recommend
  • Choosing healthy foods for a tooth-friendly and nutritious diet

"We welcome everyone's involvement in this effort to ensure that families and caregivers understand the importance of making oral care for all ages part of their daily routine," said DHHS’ Oral Health Program Manager Nancy Martin.  "For the young, elderly, and people with special needs, this means taking the time to help them maintain a healthy mouth."
