The Office of the Commissioner is responsible for the overall management of DHHS. The Commissioner sets policy for DHHS and oversees implementation of all programs and services. The Commissioner provides the leadership and direction necessary to ensure the design and delivery of a comprehensive and coordinated system of health and human services that is community based and family centered. The current Commissioner is Nicholas A. Toumpas, he was appointed on January 16, 2008.
The Developmental Disabilities Council is administratively attached to DHHS and reports to the Commissioner. The Council works to promote needed services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
The statewide Employee Assistance Program is administratively attached to the Commissioner's Office; however, the Controller provides day-to-day supervision. Confidential assistance and support for a variety of life challenges and stresses is available from Employee Assistance Program staff.
The Public Information Office responds to questions from the press and other media about DHHS and develops various brochures, press releases, fact sheets and other documents for the public to learn about DHHS.
