The Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southeast is operated by SERVE Center at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and serves the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The center has supported southeastern educators and policymakers for nearly 20 years with research, development, evaluation, technical assistance, training, and dissemination. The REL Southeast portfolio of work responds to the region's most pressing needs for high-quality research and information and conducts ongoing needs assessment using market research strategies. We have produced publications and/or provided services in the areas of reading across the curriculum, Response to Intervention, dropout prevention, early childhood, and improving math and science. Through an Evidence-Based Education Request Desk, we respond directly to specific client requests for research-based information on a just-in-time basis. We are also conducting two large-scale rigorous experimental studies on the effectiveness of interventions of key importance. One study underway in Alabama focuses on Math/Science improvement and another in Mississippi on kindergarten vocabulary development. Both involve significant collaboration with the states.

Meet REL Southeast

REL Southeast has a team of highly experienced staff with an exceptional reputation in the Southeast and beyond for providing products and services that respond to educators’ needs for support in linking research to practice as well as efficiently conducting complex, large-scale experimental studies. Having operated the REL for the Southeast Region since 1990, we have established close collaborative relationships with state and district leaders and continue to increase our connectedness to the education community through various needs-sensing, research, evaluation, outreach, dissemination, and technical assistance activities. Although most REL Southeast staff members are housed in the SERVE Center at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, others are strategically located in each state in our region in order to closely track individual state needs, maintain relationships, and provide ongoing support and services.

The REL Southeast at the SERVE Center has several key partners in managing the portfolio of work including Abt Associates Inc., Academy for Educational Development, and Empirical Education Inc.
