REL Appalachia supports the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia and is a member of a national network of regional laboratories that provides a critical link between research and practice.
REL Appalachia's mission is to provide high-quality research, analysis, and technical assistance that help state and local education agencies achieve better educational outcomes including closing the achievement gap. REL Appalachia achieves its mission through:
- An on-going assessment of problems and priorities facing regional stakeholders, of opportunities for outreach and assistance with particular focus on the distinct challenges of the rural Appalachia region.
- Research on a wide range of regional concerns including accountability and assessment, early childhood education, English language learners, high school reform and rural education.
- Assistance to the region through a unique field program that links REL researchers with state education agencies to provide technical assistance focusing on state-specific issues.
- Dissemination of research findings through many different mechanisms including the REL Appalachia E-News and Information Bulletin, the REL Appalachia website, and state and regional meetings.
Meet REL Appalachia
Headquartered at CNA in Alexandria, VA, REL Appalachia has a team of nationally recognized education and social science researchers and other education experts at CNA and in partner organizations located throughout the REL Appalachia region. CNA is a 65 year-old non-profit organization with a tradition of providing high quality research, analysis, and technical assistance to federal, state and local agencies. CNA and its partner organizations provide a robust mechanism for serving the educational research needs of the region's state and local education agencies, school districts, and schools.
