(Note: Applicants will have to report to the processing office they choose several times over the course of the application process.)

Overseas Applicants
FBI policy generally prohibits the processing of applicants who do not reside within the United States in a territory covered by one of our 56 field offices; however, exceptions are made for U.S. Government civilian and military personnel who are currently stationed abroad.

These individuals must be available for travel to the United States for testing and processing at an FBI field office. Travel to the United States for Phase I testing is at the applicant's own expense. As a result, overseas applicants may choose the field office most convenient to them for testing. Travel expenses in connection with Phase II testing will be borne by the FBI.

Applicants who are not available to travel for testing and processing should not apply until they return to the United States. Additionally, security requirements for hiring personnel who have resided overseas dictate that applicants must have, for three of the five years immediately prior to applying for this position:

  • Resided in the United States
  • Worked for the United States overseas in a Federal or military capacity
  • Been a dependent of a Federal or military employee serving overseas

If an applicant has not met the above requirements, they cannot be hired for a position within the FBI.
