Wetland and Stream
Mitigation Bank Approved

Scientists in the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) Wetlands Geology Section assisted the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) with plans for the Sugar Camp Creek Wetland and Stream Mitigation Bank, a 105-acre wetland and stream mitigation bank in Franklin County, Illinois. The ISGS provided a hydrogeologic characterization report, including recommendations for wetland and stream restoration that were incorporated into IDOT's site development plan. Garden of the Gods Field Trips
October 24 and November 14, 2009

Registration is now open for the fall 2009 Geological Science Field Trips.

These field trips mark the 80th anniversary of the ISGS' commitment to conduct public field trips each year for the benefit of the citizens of Illinois.

The Garden of the Gods area is located within the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois. Trip participants will view many interesting rock formations, given names such as Camel Rock, Anvil Rock, and Devil's Smokestack. These rock formations and cliffs at the Garden of the Gods are made of sandstone deposited 320 million years ago during the Pennsylvanian Period. Overlying these sandstones, in the northern part of the field trip area, are the Pennsylvanian coal-bearing shales, siltstones, and sandstones formed about 300 million years ago. Cataloging Library

The four Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability librarians (Anne Huber, Illinois State Geological Survey; Susan Braxton and Beth Wohlgemuth, Illinois Natural History Survey; and Laura Barnes, Illinois Sustainable Technology Center) received a grant from the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) in July 2009. The grant will be used to assist with retrospective cataloging of materials from those three libraries and the Illinois State Water Survey library. The cataloged records will be migrated to the digital I-Share and WorldCat catalogs. The Institute libraries hold many unique and Illinois-specific documents, ...more highlights
