Foundation Support

The Smithsonian depends on the generosity of foundation partners to fulfill it mission to contribute to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. Contributions from foundations make possible projects such as:

  • The presentation via visible storage of 3,000 works of art from the American art collection
  • The digitization of millions of letters, photos, and other documents that chronicle the lives of some of America’s greatest artists
  • The construction of a magnificent new gallery to house the Star-Spangled Banner – the flag that inspired our national anthem
  • The ground-breaking work in reproductive science that is enabling us to meet the challenge of preserving global biodiversity

Recent grants to Smithsonian programs include:

  • The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
The Encyclopedia of Life initiative to promote biodiversity by documenting all 1.8 million named species on the planet
  • The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation
Digitization and cataloging of portions of the National Museum of American History Scurlock Photographic Collection
  • The Ford Foundation
