Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a high school diploma or GED.

Employee hired must have a valid Class B driver’s permit with air brakes with a cargo tanker endorsement the first day of work. The employee will then have 30 calendar days to take the behind-the-wheel exam and get the class B driver’s license with air brakes and with a cargo-tank endorsement. The district will make the equipment available for the employee to practice driving during these 30 days. Prior to the completion of the probationary period, the employee must have possession of a Class A driver’s license with air brakes and with a cargo-tanker endorsement.

Requires normal vision and hearing range, with or without correction; eye-hand coordination; ability to communicate clearly to avoid confusion and misunderstanding with others; ability to remain calm and composed when dealing with distraught or angry people; ability to read, interpret, or explain applicable standards, technical literature, regulations, plans, and specifications; ability to accurately and clearly complete required paperwork.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing in normal and stressful conditions; use of construction equipment; traffic and machinery hazards may be present or may occur, safety training provided; requires walking; knowledge of practices, principles, standards and guidelines as related to Highway Maintenance and Highway Construction; required to work after hours, on weekends, and holidays during road and weather emergencies; use of two-way radio; ability to work closely with people; demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and others; drivers license to travel to public meetings and project locations.

Use of phone, calculator, reference sources, personal computer with word processing and technical software; physical mobility, agility, and mental alertness compatibly with an office, maintenance/shop, and construction project setting; work in all types of weather on a variety of uneven or slippery surfaces; ability to lift or carry several items with a total weight of 75 pounds; ability to stand for extended periods of time; requires flexibility in daily schedule; ability to work under stress; to remain calm and maintain focus under demanding and often conflicting work schedule with rapid shifts in priority; regular attendance is essential to efficiently process the volume of work in this position.

Successful applicant must reside within a 15 mile radius of the Grand Forks Section Building within 90 days from the date of hire.

Requires satisfactory completion of the interview process and a verifiable record of satisfactory performance in previous employment.

Employment is contingent upon successful passing of the medical screening process.

Summary of Work:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Highway and Roadway Maintenance: operate equipment to perform required maintenance duties, for example, tractors, trucks, rollers, pulverizers, and blade/motor grader; perform highway maintenance duties. This includes, but is not limited to, hand patching, crack pouring/sealing, erosion repair, roadway sealing, mowing, cleaning culverts, guardrail and sign repair, minor structure repair, concrete repair, asphalt repair, fence repair, flagging and work zone signing, and assisting with mini mack operations; perform basic snow and ice control/removal on secondary roads, generally during daylight hours. With training and more direct supervision will advance to utilizing more complex equipment on a variety of roads and weather conditions; receive training and instruction in the operation of more complex equipment, under direct supervision; assist in installing, repairing, and maintaining highway signs and rest areas. Operate power tools and other equipment to complete sign work. Approximately 55 percent of time is spent on this duty.

Requires: ability to function with minimal supervision & sitting.

  1. Equipment and Vehicle Maintenance: perform minor preventive and repair maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Approximately 5 percent of time is spent on this duty.
  1. Record Keeping: maintain necessary paperwork, including time records, activity reporting, daily diary, road reports, etc. Approximately 10 percent of time is spent on this duty.

Requires: keyboard familiarity.

  1. Highway Construction Project Duties: receive training and perform the following construction project duties under close supervision: materials testing, construction surveys, and minor construction inspections; receive training on documentation requirements, including diaries, and inspection reports. Approximately 10 percent of time is spent on this duty.

Requires: use of survey and lab equipment; use of engineering/construction related software and survey software.

  1. Building and Grounds Maintenance: perform building and ground maintenance duties, such as shovel snow, mow and water grass, maintain fuel pumps, painting, basic carpentry, plumbing tasks, clean shop floors and work area,  clean up shop grounds, minor building repairs, and maintain a safe working environment; maintenance of radio tower grounds and buildings. Approximately 15 percent of time is spent on this duty.
  1. Information Technology Equipment Maintenance: perform general routine maintenance of the Information Technology Division's roadway and radio system equipment, including cleaning of lenses of roadway weather information equipment. Approximately 5 percent of time is spent on this duty.

This position is a safety-sensitive position.  An employee, not already in a safety-sensitive position, who is selected for the position, but before being hired, will be required to satisfactorily complete a drug test.  In addition, all employees applying for this position must sign the Drug Testing Release form (SFN 50098) and the district office will contact current and previous employers (within past two years).
