Arkansas relies on coal to provide roughly half of its electricity.  To help reduce emissions, with the help of grants from the Department of Energy, Arkansas has joined several of its neighbors in forming the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership.  Arkansas is also home to the Arkansas Nuclear One Power Plant, which accounts for almost a third of the state’s electric production.

A portion of the funds from the State Energy Program are allocated by formula among the states.  To apply for a grant from the remaining funds, each Governor is required to write a letter to the Secretary of Energy explaining that the state will pursue policies to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy as outlined in Section 410 page 32 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
