Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Yup, it's true--turns out that rock on Mars is a meteorite. Opportunity rover confirms it (grab your 3-D glasses, if you have 'em): http://bit.ly/oTGyL

Composition measurements by NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity confirm that this rock on the Martian surface is an iron-nickel meteorite.

If the rock comes from space, why I don't see any signs of ground impact, like a small crater or something?

It would be a very nice gesture to name the newly discovered meteorite "Inistrahull" after a small island which is located off the northwest coast of Ireland. Their historic and archeologically significant mass rock was recently stolen from the tiny island by some vandals. Who knows, it might even help them to get their stolen rock back.

Here's a link to the story. http://www.inishowennews.com/07MassRock2.htm

The Opportunity rover has eyed an odd-shaped, dark rock, about 0.6 meters (2 feet) across on the surface of Mars, which may be a meteorite.

Greg Smye-Rumsby I understand that Spirit has few possibilities to alter its centre of gravity, however, it does have the boom arm of the IDD. Surely by extending the arm to its full extent the balance of the rover will also shift. This may aid in getting more grip on at least one of the drive wheels.

Traver Noakes

Traver Noakes Ok did you guys over at JPL just see what looked like an asteroid that just passed over about 30 minutes ago? It was definitely going faster than any satellite and it was traveling straight instead of in orbit. What tipped me off was the flashing meaning it was spinning. I didn't know where to post this so I went here.

Didn't see it, but tiny objects enter our atmosphere every day and burn up in a fireball flash of light. You might want to take a look at our new site at www.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroidwatch. You can download a widget or sign up for the Twitter feed for alerts on asteroids.

Thanks.

I'm guessing that's what I remember: we showed up out of the blue, and didn't have a tour booked, and some kind soul let us join in anyway. Thanks, kind soul circa 1990.

So there isn't a "visitor center" sort of thing, like a couple of the other popular Centers have? ;-) ... Read More

I don't mean to be a dorky tourist guy -- really I don't. I think JPL certainly has more important stuff to spend limited resources on, than having a fulltime museum-type staff. But on the other hand, I guess I expected with all the rover public interest, maybe there'd be more of a public side of things.

My worry though, is that the more you make such things tourist-friendly, the more the kids are unimpressed unless you have a water park on site. (I will never, ever forget the kid in the Washington DC aquarium who complained "That shark isn't even very big!")

David, the "visitor center" is located within the gates and is part of the public tour. We hope to one day have a visitor center located on the outside so everyone can drop by more easily. It's certainly been discussed.
