NNSA Marks Two-Year Construction Milestone at MOX Facility in South Carolina

The National Nuclear Security Administration has marked the second full year of successful construction of the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina.

The MOX facility will fabricate surplus weapon-grade plutonium into mixed oxide fuel for use in existing nuclear power plants.  The facility is an important part of the United States’ efforts to make sure that plutonium can no longer be readily used for nuclear weapons purposes while simultaneously generating electricity for utility customers.

Find out more about MOX by visiting our two-year anniversary page featuring a video about the project and a slideshow highlighting construction progress since the groundbreaking in August 2007. (Note: Video and slideshow are hosted externally.)
