USDA Office of Communications - Our mission is to provide leadership, expertise, counsel and coordination for the development of communications strategies which are vital to the overall formulation, awareness and acceptance of U.S. Department of Agriculture programs and policies, and serves as the principal USDA contact point for the dissemination of consistent, timely information.

Our goal is that educational video features; training videos and speeches already being produced would reach wider audiences when posted on public sites that offer a library of content. Our hope is that Department and agency Public Service announcements would have vastly expanded audience awareness, as well as an official source with more than 100 years in the business.

Outstanding initiative. I would like to hear more mention of locally raised locker meat and poultry as well. Some sort of system to allow small-scale guys like me to get pasture-raised chickens to market more readily would be a nice compliment to the program as well. Besides the fuel savings, and better taste, there is a lot of benefit to the health of those of us who choose to grow our own, and/or buy locally grown.

I am a farmer in northwest NJ and belong to a grassroots organization called The Foodshed Alliance. We started a farmers market last year that is truly local --with vendors coming from only 25 miles away or less. We are trying to educate people about farmers, farmland and sustainable farmimg practices - it is taking a lot of time and effort but I think we are starting to make a dent. We could use more press on this issue. I know the USDA is talking more and more about this "foodshed" idea and our organization has been practising this for about 7 years now. I would like to invite you to visit us here Blairstown, NJ to see our wonderful market and how we are bringing business back to the farm and strengthening our community at the same time.

The initiative is a step in the right direction. However, the better move would be to remove all the red-tape that keeps local growers from succeeding.

I agree completely with the comments of 21cancer21. To quote Joel Salatin, "everything I want to do is illegal". What one gov't agency permits, another denies! For example, USDA and OhioDA say I can sell up to 1000 broilers direct to consumer from my farm without needing to undergo the expensive and complex inspection process. However, the Ohio EPA prohibits unless I install a massive water containment system to catch and contain any water that comes in contact with the chicken during processing. The rules are written to deal with issues generated by large scale agribusiness, but are applied and enforced on the small producer who does not generate the same issues. Something is wrong when farmers face jail time and criminal penalties for selling a gallon of fresh 'raw' milk to an educated consumer who specifically goes out of the way to find and purchase it.

I am hearing buzz about some draconian rules being imposed next year from Mr Vilsak's office (former Monsanto exec). Is it true that new rules fro farmers markets will be all produce will have to be under refrigeration, not ice chests or dry ice? How will that help in the whole "know our farmer" scheme?

As a local food grower, I appreciate the sentiment of the message...but a true initiative to local growers and consumers can only begin with changes to legislation and regulations that currently inhibit and prevent the exchange of goods and services between producers and consumers. As long as local farmers' hands are tied to industrial standards (disgusting as they are) the laws prevent them from providing people good, wholesome food. As long as consumers' hands are tied by laws prohibiting them from buying meat and milk directly from their neighbors without government intervention, they are restricted from getting the good wholesome food they want. Initiatives are good - but let's change some laws!

The USDA is clearly listening to the people, and this initiative is very welcome! Thank you for taking this important first step.

I love this new initiative. I live in Miami-Dade County, Florida and as a very active and involved parent, ptsa President and children's advocate for healthy eating, I believe this initiative should also open the conversation to improve the foods served through our food lunch program. It is more processed than fresh. So how do we support local produce and farms without serving these wonderful bounties to our children in schools? We must start the school lunch reform. It is the wave of the future and it will give longevity to our children's lives. It starts through education.
