New Arizona Educational Technology Standard Approved
On May 18th, 2009 the State Board of Education approved Arizona's new Educational Technology Standard. These new set of standards will replace the current Arizona Technology Standards that were adopted in 2000. Many thanks to all who participated on the standards revision committee or provided feedback during the process. A resource guide to support the implementation of the new standard is under development and should be available in the fall. You can view the new standard at http://www.ade.az.gov/standards/technology/default.asp.

Successful Connecting IDEAL with District/School Planning Held on May 11th, 2009
Over 150 individuals representing 30 different districts and organization attended the recent Connecting IDEAL with District/School Planning event that was held at the Black Canyon Conference Center in Phoenix on May 11th. District teams attended several sessions throughout the day that focused on connecting the resources in IDEAL to district and school plans. Some of the sessions topics were Embedding IDEAL into Instruction, Using IDEAL to Support Assessment, Enhancing Professional Development with IDEAL, IDEAL 101 and IDEAL and NCLB District Improvement Plan. Thank you to all who participated in the event on the 11th and learned more about leveraging IDEAL resources provided free to all school districts and charter schools throughout the state.

New Arizona Strategic Long-Range Educational Technology Plan Approved
On April 27th, 2009 the State Board of Education approved Arizona's Strategic Long-Range Educational Technology plan titled Transforming Education: Enabling Learning for All Arizona Students. This plan incorporates goals and recommendations that address the use of technology in student learning, preparation and development of educators to use technology effectively in the classroom, technology leadership, and providing the infrastructure to support the use of technology to enhance student achievement. A committee of stakeholders will meet in the next few months to determine expectations of the LEA/Charter alignment to the new plan and compliance with E-Rate and Title IID. Many thanks to all who participated on the advisory committee or provided feedback during the planning process. 2009 Horizon Report (K-12) - Upcoming Trends Report
Horizon Report - K-12 edition is an ongoing research project that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, research, or creative expression within education around the globe. The 2009 K-12 report identifies collaborative environments, online communications tools, mobile devices, cloud computing, smart objects, and the personal web as trends that will have a significant impact on the educational process over the next 5 years. SEDTA Class of 2020 Action Plan Reports
The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), representing all 50 states and DC, has recently released the Class of 2020: Action Plan for Education.

The Class of 2020: Action Plan for Education Initiative includes the development of five comprehensive publications with models, research, and specific recommendations for policies addressing the following topics:

  • High-Speed Broadband Access for All Kids: Breaking Through the Barriers
  • Science, Technology, Engineering & Math
  • Technology-Based Assessments Improve Teaching and Learning
  • Learning Virtually - Expanding Opportunities
  • Empowering Teachers: A Professional and Collaborative Approach
