RELEASED BY: Kelly A. Ayotte, Attorney General
SUBJECT: Charitable Solicitations
DATE: February 4, 2009
RELEASE TIME: Immediate

The Attorney General is receiving increased reports of charitable solicitation scams being conducted in the State of New Hampshire, including requests for donations to nonprofit organizations which either do not exist or are not legitimate.

In order to better protect the generous donors in our state from these fraudulent solicitations, Attorney General Kelly Ayotte has requested the Charitable Trusts Unit to post useful information for donors on its webpage.

The Charitable Trusts Unit currently posts a list of all charities registered with the Attorney General as well as a list of all registered professional fundraisers on its website: www.doj.nh.gov/charitable . All professional fundraisers soliciting donations on behalf of nonprofit organizations are required to obtain a permit from the Attorney General before the solicitation campaign is commenced and beginning today a listing of all approved campaigns will be added to the website. This list will be updated on a monthly basis.

“This information will assist New Hampshire citizens in selecting the recipients of their charitable giving by providing information on those organizations filing with our office,” Attorney General Ayotte stated.

Please contact the Charitable Trusts Unit if you have any questions regarding this matter at (603) 271-3591.
