Stastistics on Crime Victims with Disabilities
To Be Released in Upcoming Conference

BJS will present the latest data on Crime Victims With Disabilities at the National Professional Training Conference on Responding to Crime Victims with Disabilities (September 30–October 2, 2009).

Crime Against Persons with Disabilities (M. Rand, E. Harrell) Presents the first findings about nonfatal violent and property crime experienced by persons with disabilities drawn from the National Crime Victimization Survey based on questions developed to meet the mandates of the Crime Victims with Disabilities Awareness Act of 1998.

Data on nonfatal violent victimization (rape/sexual assault, robbery, aggravated and simple assault) and property crime victimization (burglary, motor vehicle theft, theft) occurring in 2007 are presented. Population estimates of people with and without disability are drawn from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.  Comparisons are made between the victimization experience of persons with disabilities and persons without disabilities. Also examined are victim and crime characteristics including offender weapon use, victim injuries, and police reporting.
