Quiet Zone & Crossing Safety Program

Introduction:

Senate Bill 2338 amends and reenacts Section 57-43.2-19 of the North Dakota Century Code. The amendment allocates $1,600,000 of highway tax distribution funds (source: special fuels excise taxes collected on sales of diesel fuel rail crossingto a railroad) and $900,000 in federal highway traffic safety funds (Section 130) to be used for highway-rail grade crossing safety projects.

Effective July 1, 2009, political subdivisions may apply for grants to establish quiet zones or make individual crossing safety improvements. Included in this webpage are the links to assist in establishing a quiet zone or crossing safety improvement.

The NDDOT encourages all political subdivisions interested in establishing a quiet zone or crossing safety improvement to read through Senate Bill 2338 as well as Federal Railroad Administration’s guidance as the initial step in this process.

Application Process:

Application instructions are provided for both Quiet Zone and Crossing Safety applications to assist in answering any questions the applicant may have during the application process. For any questions that cannot be answered by the instructions, or other supporting information please contact NDDOT Rail Project Manager via email dot@nd.gov or via phone (701) 328-4409.
