Slow for the Cone Zone

Welcome

Slow for the Cone Zone is a social marketing, public awareness campaign that warns California motorists of the hazards associated with driving recklessly through California's highway work zones. Since its inception, the number of collisions in construction and other improvement zones on California state highways has consistently decreased, year after year. Announcing 2009 "Slow for the Cone Zone" Poster Contest Winners

A poster contest was created to bring awareness about driving safely in and around work zones. This is a great way to engage our youth and give them an opportunity to share their thoughts through the impression of art. For one of the artists, this message hits especially close to home. A Caltrans co-worker was killed on the same highway in District 8 that the artist's father and godfather work on. He used the poster contest to display the dangers highway workers face daily and the death that occurred in his district.

The contest was open to the children and grandchildren of Caltrans employees. Posters were judged on creativity, reflection of theme and the use of color. The three winners will be awarded savings bonds, donated by the California Transportation Foundation (CTF).

Grand Prize Winner - Rebecca Lai

Rebecca Lai, 16, of San Marino, is the Overall Winner of the Caltrans Poster Contest. She earned a $200 bond from CTF for her efforts. The 10th grader at the Webb Schools of California said she attempted to express the “Slow for the Cone Zone” campaign ideology in her poster entry. Her mother Lydia Lai currently works in District 7 as a Right of Way agent and her father worked for Caltrans in the Bay Area for more than 10 years. Art is a hobby of Rebecca’s, and she plans to become a doctor when she grows up.

Andrew Montoya, 15, of Colton, is the winner of the Caltrans poster contest for 13 to 17-year-olds. He earned a $100 savings bond from CTF for his efforts. This Colton High School 10th grader heard about the death of Caltrans Maintenance Equipment Operator John Knabenbauer from his dad, Tony Montoya a Caltrans Equipment Operator II who works in the same eastern Southern California district. Andrew said he felt for the family's loss. “Both my dad and godfather work on the highways everyday and I thought that any day a tragic accident could happen to my family.” Andrew is on his high school’s baseball team, as well as its national honors program and plans to get a master’s degree in computer animation or architecture.
