There are more than 800,000 New Jersey residents with varying degrees of hearing loss ranging from mild to profound. The Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DDHH) provides the following services and programs: 

Information and Referral Services...
DDHH maintains the most central location for resources on hearing loss.  This includes the “Communication Access Referral System”  which maintains a list of sign language interpreterscaptioning providers and Assistive Listening Devices to provide people who are Deaf and hard of hearing with communication access.

The division also maintains a “hotline” responding to consumers’ requests for information on a variety of topics such as medical, legal, employment and healthcare concerns. 
 
 
Technical Assistance...
The division conducts educational workshops and training sessions to enhance the public’s awareness of hearing loss and assistive technology devices.
 
 
Advocacy...
The division advocates on behalf of people who are Deaf and hard of hearing to ensure that services routinely available to residents of NEW JERSEY, are accessible to people with hearing loss.
 
 
Publications...
The division publishes a popular newsletter, the Monthly Communicator, which is distributed to more than 8,700 individuals at no charge to the subscriber.

In addition, it produces the Organizations Serving People with Hearing Loss in New Jersey, a comprehensive guide listing state and national agencies and organizations providing services to people with hearing loss.
 
 
Equipment Distribution Program...
The division, through its Equipment Distribution Program, distributes assistive communication devices free of charge to eligible residents of New Jersey .  In the last 15 years, more than 4,700 devices have been distributed.  These include telecommunications, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, baby alert systems and artificial larynx devices.
 
 
Assistive Communication Devices Demonstration Centers...
The division operates a number of assistive communication devices demonstration centers throughout the state of New Jersey.  Devices, which assist people with hearing loss, are on display for hands-on demonstration.
