Office of the Chief Information Officer

About The Office of the Chief Information Officer

The Office of the CIO leads the management of information technology (IT) in the Department of Energy, ensuring that the entire Department takes full advantage of IT as it carries out its missions, at least cost, in an energy efficient way, and adequately protecting its IT systems and information.

OCIO:

  • leads IT management in the Department in a way that is consistent with the DOE culture, recognizing the “federated” nature of the Department, and employing “just enough” management discipline to meet internal management requirements and external constraints, and providing flexibility for differences among DOE programs and organizations
  • oversees DOE’s IT capital investment process and the development and use of the Department’s IT enterprise architecture, which helps ensure that the Department's annual $2 billion investment in IT is well managed
  • leads DOE’s cyber security program, based on risk, and informed by the continuing, growing threat, providing adequate protection to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of DOE’s IT systems and information in support of DOE programs
  • leads the management of desktop and application hosting support for DOE employees, with excellent customer service and performance, at low cost, and in an energy efficient way with strong cyber security
  • conducts outreach across the Department to help match computing resources with current and emerging DOE program requirements and to stimulate innovative use of advanced technology to improve mission execution
