In April 2009, five- and six-year-old children from the Fatostat kindergarten in Pristina took a field trip to the Eurolona dairy farm and milk processor. The visit, organized by USAID's Kosovo Private Enterprise Program, provided an opportunity for the children to see how the milk they consume is produced and encourage them to consume more dairy products for a healthy diet.
Beyond the opportunity to discuss good nutrition, the kindergarten visit promoted better understanding of, and increased loyalty to, domestically-produced dairy products. Many people in Kosovo purchase imported milk and dairy products; school visits offer a way to overcome the negative image of locally-produced dairy products.
The Kosovo Private Enterprise Program is helping to modernize Kosovo's dairy industry, increasing sales and employment. With USAID assistance, Eurolona is producing a new variety of yogurt drink and yogurt, now available in Kosovo markets, as well as its first white cheese.
This four-year initiative, implemented by Booz Allen Hamilton, aims to stimulate the competitiveness of Kosovo's private sector through grants and consulting, support of business enabling reform efforts, expanded workforce development and training, and technical assistance to strengthen business services and associations.
