A Blending of Science and Tradition

Coast Salish leaders, skippers and community and USGS scientists are partnering to blend traditional knowledge of the Coast Salish Nation and USGS science to help understand and manage environmental resources and protect mother earth.

Coast Salish (indigenous peoples of the Salish Sea ecoregion), USGS scientists, members of western Washington Tribes and British Columbia First Nations measure water quality in Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia during the Tribal Journey, an annual summer canoe voyage. The project provides a snapshot of current water quality conditions and data that can be compared with future measurements along successive journeys. This information is important to improve management of ancestral waters that are experiencing environmental decline.
