U.S., Afghan Forces Conduct Night Operation
As seen through a night-vision device, U.S. Army Sgt. Andrew Burch tells Pfc. Frank Hardcastle and an Afghan National Army soldier how to orient themselves for security during Operation Champion Sword, an air assault mission, in Khost province, Afghanistan, Aug. 4, 2009. Burch and Hardcastle are assigned to the 25th Infantry Division’s 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team. International Security Assistance Forces and Afghan security forces teamed up to target specific militants in eastern Afghanistan.

U.S., Afghan Forces Conduct Night Operation
As seen through a night-vision device, U.S. Army soldiers watch a CH-47 Chinook helicopter land during an air assault mission during Operation Champion Sword in Khost province, Afghanistan, Aug. 2, 2009. The operation involves Afghan security forces and International Security Assistance Forces in efforts to focus on specific militant targets and safe havens within Sabari and Terezai districts of Khost province in eastern Afghanistan. The soldiers are assigned to the 25th Infantry Division's Focus Targeting Force, 4th Brigade Combat Team.

U.S. Soldiers and Iraqis Construct Culvert
Iraqi construction workers attach chains to a new culvert to be hoisted by a crane near Almarah, Iraq, Aug. 2, 2009. The culvert replaces a temporary bridge that connects parts of a route to Arnhem. U.S. soldiers Sling Load a Howitzer
U.S Army soldiers prepare to hook up a M777 lightweight howitzer to a CH-47F Chinook helicopter which will be sling loaded to a forward operating base
in Spin Buldak in southern Afghanistan, Aug. 2, 2009. The soldiers are assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division’s Battery B, 3rd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, and the helicopter crew is assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 82nd Aviation Regiment, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade. Sling loading cargo and personnel is one of many missions the CH-47F helicopter crews conduct to support U.S. troop presence and expansion in southern Afghanistan.
